Main Street Arts & Crafts Festival
Every year during the last weekend in June, artisans and vendors fill Centennial Park in downtown Hot Springs to sell their handcrafted arts and crafts at one of the best arts & crafts festival in the Southern Black Hills. Kids are treated to a children’s stage and a full line-up of musicians entertain for the three-day event. 2019 dates are June 28-30. Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival
The Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival, now in its fourth year, takes place each August with two days of events beginning before dawn (around 5:45AM MST) on August 24th with the balloon launches at the Hot Springs Municipal Airport east of town on Hwy 79. The festivities continue with special sidewalk sales just for Balloon Festival Weekend as well as an Art Walk, where you can meet regional artists at downtown businesses and see or even take home a piece of their art yourself! The evening concludes with a Night Glow back out at the airport where you will get to see all the balloons light up like giant light bulbs on the ground. Stay over at a Hot Springs-area accommodation and get up early the next morning for another launch on the morning on Sunday the 25th. Climb Hot Springs
An outdoor stair-climbing event that incorporates five historic flights of stairs–657 steps in total–into a seven mile race that offers picturesque views of the Black Hills and the local river walk, tests runners’ every muscle group, and crisscrosses the tourist-centric town. There’s also a shorter three-mile route that includes two sets of stairs. Pairing a running portion with a series of outdoor stair climbs, the Climb Hot Springs race is one of only two of its kind in the nation–with the Bisbee 1000 The Great Stair Climb in Arizona being the other. Christmas in the Hills
A longtime Hot Springs tradition begins the first weekend in December with the tree lighting, performances by the Sandstone Singers and Hot Springs High School Les Chanteurs Swing Choir and parade of lights on the Friday evening, a marketplace all day Saturday and ending Sunday with a tour of homes. Enjoy the holiday season the Hot Springs way! Christmas in the Hills’s 2019 date is TBA.
4th of July Events
“The Veterans Town” goes all-out during America’s birthday celebration with 5K and 10K races, community picnic, a demolition derby, fireworks at dusk, and even a mid-day duck race in which rubber ducks are floated down Fall River and people follow along in hopes their duck will win a prize! Spring Fling Home & Garden Show
Every April, the Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce celebrates the coming of the summer season with a home & garden show filled with vendors, live demonstrations and plenty of food. Spring Fling 2019 will be held on April 27, 2019 from 9am to 3pm!
Custer State Park Buffalo Round-up
Feel the thunder and join the herd at the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. Approximately 1,300 bison are rounded up and driven to the buffalo corrals in this event intended to help manage the herd at Custer State Park, making it a spectacle anyone can enjoy. Hot Springs is actually the same driving time to the Buffalo Round-Up as Custer, SD! Make Hot Springs your stay for the Round-Up! In 2019, the Roundup will take place on September 27. Fall River Freedom Ride Poker Run
A Sturgis Rally event! Starting at the South Dakota State Veterans Home, motorcycle riders depart in the morning for a flag parade and military escort through downtown Hot Springs, “The Veterans Town,” and then up through Custer State Park. Must be 21 years older to participate and proceeds benefit the State Home residents – a great time for all in honor of our veterans.
Wildcat Classic Mountain Bike Race
40 miles of mountain biking in the pristine Southern Black Hills of South Dakota. You will be amazed at the solitude, scenery, ideal riding terrain and hospitality. Three distances are offered, 40 mile classic, 28 mile quickie and a 7 mile kiddy/beginner. The WILDCAT hugs the west and southern boundaries of Wind Cave National Park.
Canyon bottoms and rims, meadows, ridge tops, downhills, and gradual climbs create the course. Prepare for a very fun, ride-able and sustainable course with beautiful scenery and access to isolated places not accessible by motor vehicles and the whole race starts and ends in Hot Springs. Southern Hills Triathlon
Hosted by the Friends of the Hot Springs Public Library for 20 years in cooperation with South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks, the annual Southern Hills Triathlon marks the end of summer in late August each year at Angostura Recreation Area. A great event for outdoors enthusiasts! 2019 marks the 22nd Annual Triathlon!
Southern Hills Community Theatre
Southern Hills Community Theatre, founded in 2013, brings the tradition of live theatre to the Mueller Civic Center stage with shows 3 times a year. The Hot Springs area is filled with a surprising amount of creative individuals with backgrounds in theatre, music, literature and film, so staging family-friendly productions ranging in genre from comedy to melodrama is only natural in a community this artistic. Hot Springs Concert Series
