Plan to spend some time in Historic Hot Springs, one of America’s Distinctive Destinations.

 

Before you begin:
Stop by the Depot Visitor Center on North River Street or the Maverick Junction Visitor Center and pick up some maps, get some directions and suggestions to tailor your time in Hot Springs!

 

Day 1 – Some exciting things to do and see:   Time:
Rise early, head to Wind Cave National Park to see the wildlife
  • Plan to hike one of the nature trails
  • Drive around the wildlife loop
  • Take your camera – you might see some buffalo, elk, deer, antelope, coyotes or prairie dogs!
  1 to 2 hours
Tour Wind Cave
  • Take one of the exciting walking tours
  • For the adventurous – try a Wild Cave adventure tour
  2 to 4 hours
Head back to Hot Springs for lunch in one of our great restaurants

 

Enjoy the fresh warm spring water of Evans Plunge
  • Experience the thrilling water slides
  • Try the Tarzan Rings or the full service health club
  • Or just soak in the pool or one of the hot tubs
  2 to 4 hours
Take a stroll downtown and explore the gift shops, book stores, antique shops and art galleries   2 to 3 hours
Have a relaxing dinner in one of our many restaurants   2 to 3 hours
Possible after dinner activities:
  • An evening swim at Evans Plunge (your pass is good all day)
  • Play miniature golf at Putt4Fun
   
Day 2 – More exciting things to do!   Time:
Stop by the Depot Visitor Center and pick up a “Step Back in Time” walking tour guide
  • Take a self guided tour of River Street
  1 to 2 hours
Experience our history at the Pioneer Museum
  • Marvel at the historic old sandstone school house
  • View a wide variety of exciting exhibits documentingHot Spring’s early history
  2 to 4 hours
Try a new and different restaurant for lunch    
Plan an afternoon at the world famous Mammoth Site
  • See actual mammoth bones in an actual dig site
  • Let your child be a part of the Junior Paleo Dig Program where they can get in the dirt:
    (Reservations required – 605-745-6017)
  • Shop the gift store for some mammoth goodies!
  2 to 4 hours
Honor our veterans
  • Take a drive through the campus of our State VeteransHome and the Hot Springs Veterans Hospital campus
  1 hour
See if you can find a new favorite place for dinner    
Possible after dinner activities:
  • Walk the Fall River Freedom Trail – go under a waterfall and stick your feet in this warm water river
  • Treat yourself to some ice cream at Dairy Queen
  • Take the kids to Woolly’s for some video games and refreshments
   
Day 3 – You’re not done yet – Still more exciting things to do!   Time:
Visit the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary (bring your camera)
  • See wild mustangs in a beautiful natural setting
  • View wildlife and old movie sets
  • See Native American cultural sites and more
  • Shop in gift shop and buy one of Dayton Hyde’s interesting books
  3 to 6 hours
Stop by Cascade Falls on your way back to town    
Enjoy another lunch in Hot Springs – you might try one of the buffets    
Treat yourself to an afternoon at a spa at the Red Rock River Resort
  • Make a reservation and relax
  2 to 4 hours
End the day by browsing our shops and stores   1 to 2 hours
Find a new place for dinner – maybe a steak house or a gourmet restaurant!    
Possible after dinner activities:
  • Go for an evening swim at Evans Plunge
  • When is the last time you went bowling? Head to Winner’s Circle Lanes
  • Go to a free concert in the park (check for time and schedule)
   
Day 4 – Venture out and try something different for the day!    
Treat yourself to a day of golf at our award winning Southern Hills Municipal Golf Course
  • Call 605-745-6400 for a tee time or to rent clubs
  • This spectacular 18 hole golf course was rated 4.5 Stars by Golf Digest
  • Consistently rated by Golf Week Magazine as one of the “Best Places to Play”
  • Guys, if your wife doesn’t golf – give her the keys to the car so she can shop or go back to a spa
   
Spend the day fishing
  • You might head to Angostura Recreation Area – they have a beach for swimming, plenty of water for boating, plus hiking trails and more

  • Cold Brook Reservoir (it’s where the locals go for good trout fishing)
  • Bring the kids – there is a beach and picnic area

  • Trout Haven
  • No license required, and they clean them and cook the trout right there for you
   
Bicycle or hike the Michelson Trail
  • The Minnekahta Trail Head is just a few miles west of town
  • Experience over 100 miles of one of the nation’s premier “rail to trail” bike trails with spectacular scenery, bridges and tunnels
   
Day 5 and 6 – Pick and choose from these day-long "Road Trip Options"    
  • Visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial
  • Visit Crazy Horse Mountain
  • Spend a day in Custer State Park
  • See Jewel Cave National Monument
  • Visit Heritage Center at Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge
  • Try your luck at the Prairie Wind Casino, just east of Oelrichs
